Any half-decent choir will help singers improve their skills week by week.

But sometimes that alone is not enough if you really want to develop and grow.
The professional world has a concept called Continuing Professional Development (CPD) — defined as “learning experiences which help you develop and improve your professional practice.”
But why should professionals have all the fun? Wouldn’t we all like to embrace the idea of continual learning and growth?
That means you always being on the lookout for opportunities to develop your own practice, whether as a singer or a choir leader.
This might involve:
- attending workshops
- signing up for a course,
- reading inspiring books
- pushing yourself a little further in choir each week
- finding a mentor
A related concept is lifelong learning which has a broader scope. It includes not only formal training but also the everyday experiences that shape and enrich us.
It’s never too late to learn a new skill, or to build on an existing one. It’s a process that can continue throughout our lives.
So remember: developing as a singer or choir leader is ongoing and self-motivated. Don’t just leave it to your weekly choir practice — take charge of your own learning journey!
What do you do outside choir to keep developing your singing or leadership skills?
