Why singing leaves you tired – and relaxed

Singers often say how tired they feel after a rehearsal or workshop.

Paradoxically, singers who arrive tired at the start often leave feeling energised. What’s going on?

Singing together takes a lot of concentration.

You have to listen carefully as you’re learning a new song; pay attention to the choir leader; fit in with other singers in your part; remember how your harmony goes; balance your voice with others; and focus on the lyrics.

That level of concentration is a big deal.

You’re also breathing a lot more deeply than you do in everyday life.

All these things taken together mean that you’re using a lot of energy. No wonder you’re tired at the end!

But you’ll also be relaxed, not only because of breathing deeply, but because there has been no room for any other thoughts in your mind.

There is no space in your head for any worries, anxieties or leftover rubbish from the day. 100% concentration leaves no extra room.

Which is why you might feel tired at the end, but almost certainly relaxed, and maybe even a little energised.

Think of all those times you’ve had trouble sleeping after a choir rehearsal!
