Take your time! Being unable to learn songs quickly doesn’t define your singing talent

One of the many reasons why people say that they can’t sing is that it takes them ages to learn a song.

But that’s OK. Even professionals take time to get a song under their belt.

There is a myth amongst novice singers that “real” singers can pick up a song after hearing it once.

That is a superhuman talent that most of us regular singers don’t have!

It takes quite a time to really let a song bed in. Especially if you are learning by ear.

There needs to be lots of repetitions until it becomes second nature.

Even if we learn the notes in our part well, there’s still song structure to contend with. That can take quite a while to get your head around.

So be patient, enjoy the process, accept that different singers learn at different rates and marvel at how well you sing when you finally nail that song.

Taking time to learn a song means you will have studied it in detail rather than rushing in and thinking you’ve picked it up quickly. It’s not a competition.
