Don’t stagnate: there is always something new to learn and discover

I was trying to come up with an idea for this week’s blog post, but everything I thought of I’d already written about!

For a moment, I started to worry that I’d run out of things to say about choirs and singing. Surely that can’t be true — can it?

When we do something often and over a long time, it’s easy to feel like we’ve “arrived.” That we’ve learned all there is to learn. It can happen with singing, choir leading, choosing repertoire, warm-ups — anything we do regularly.

But if it feels like there’s nothing new to discover, it probably just means we’re not looking closely enough at what’s already in front of us.

I used to have a Tai Chi teacher who’d been practising for more than 30 years. Every single day he did the same sequence of movements — always in the same order.

And yet, every week he’d come to class excited to tell us about something new he’d discovered that morning. The same moves, every day, for three decades — and still finding fresh insights!

That’s a great reminder for us as singers and choir leaders. Rather than just going through the motions each week, we can dig a little deeper. There’s always some new nuance to notice, a new way to approach a song, or a small shift in how we listen or lead.

So maybe I haven’t run out of things to write about after all. If I sit and ponder a bit longer, I’m sure a new idea will pop up for next week’s post!
