If you don’t have a mailing list for people interested in your choir or singing workshops, you’re missing a trick.
It’s the easiest and most powerful way to recruit singers.
who’s on my mailing list?
If you lead a choir, you’ll already have a mailing list of your current members so you can keep them informed of choir-related things.
But you should also have a list of people who are interested in your choir and might be potential recruits.
Who are these people?
They’re those who have:
- attended your concerts
- contacted you to enquire about your choir
- bought your recordings or other merchandise
Similarly, if you run singing workshops, the best way to find singers for future ones is to keep a mailing list of those who have attended before — or those who’ve enquired but haven’t yet managed to come.
how to create a mailing list
Make it easy for people to sign up. Offer as many ways as possible:
- a form on your website
- a sign-up list at your concerts
- a QR code on your business card and other publicity material
- asking permission from workshop attendees (you’ll already have their email address from booking)
Collect the minimum information — you want to make is as simple as possible:
- email address
- name
- location (if you run choirs or workshops in several places)
And don’t add people without their explicit permission.
keeping your list active
Once they’ve signed up, keep them interested with occasional mailshots — but don’t bombard them.
Use a free mailing list platform. There are plenty available, and most offer a free service if you have fewer than a few thousand contacts.
If you prefer to manage your own contact list and send emails manually, always use blind carbon copy (BCC) so you don’t reveal everyone’s addresses.
why your mailing list matters
Your mailing list is a valuable, targeted group of people who you already know are interested in what you do. That’s far more powerful than scattershot approaches like posters or Facebook events.
And you might be surprised — there are people who’ve been on my mailing list for up to 17 years before finally attending one of my workshops!
